La Iglesia occidental se encuentra en un momento crítico. Más que nunca, los cristianos deben resistirse a las fuerzas culturales negativas de nuestros tiempos con fortaleza y con un atractivo irresistible. Lo que necesitamos es contar con seguidores de Cristo que estén dispuestos a enfrentarse a la realidad sin vacilar, y responder con una fidelidad inconmovible. Os Guinness describe a esos cristianos como “gente imposible”, “cristianos con corazones que puedan derretirse de compasión pero con rostros afirmados como el pedernal y espinazos de acero a los que no se pueda manipular, sobornar, parar o incluir en un club, pero sin perder la mansedumbre, la misericordia, la gracia y la compasión de nuestro Señor”.

Pocas exposiciones sobre los retos modernos son más realistas que esta, y pocos llamados al coraje cristiano son más oportunos, decididos y esperanzadores. Guinness sostiene que debemos abordar el secularismo y el ateísmo de una manera nueva, rebatiendo sus ideas con discernimiento y una nueva expresión de la fe. Los cristianos son llamados a ser gente imposible, llenos de coraje y de misericordia en una época desafiante.

Os Guinness describes these Christians as "impossible people," those who have "hearts that can melt with compassion, but with faces like flint and backbones of steel who are unmanipulable, unbribable, undeterrable and unclubbable, without ever losing the gentleness, the mercy, the grace and the compassion of our Lord." Few accounts of the challenge of today are more realistic, and few calls to Christian courage are more timely, resolute―and hopeful. Guinness argues that we must engage secularism and atheism in new ways, confronting competing ideas with discernment and fresh articulation of the faith. Christians are called to be impossible people, full of courage and mercy in challenging times.
